Job Summary:

The Optical Design Scientist is responsible for polarizer design and modeling, providing support for development and evaluation of new products in the Optics division. This position works closely with R&D engineers and with Marketing, Sales, and Product Management to transform market drivers into viable products. With expertise in optics and sub-wavelength structures, the candidate is expected to be creative and propose new ideas and products that both meet current market needs, and provide growth into new market areas. Some portion of time is allocated to characterization of material properties of thin films, patterned thin films, and nanostructured surfaces.

Essential Functions:

  • Optical design and modeling of sub-wavelength and resonance structures using metals, dielectrics, and other materials for use as polarizers and sensors.
  • Support R&D and production with characterization of optical properties of product materials.
  • Maintain an understanding of current developments in optics, sensors, simulations, and characterization, particularly in the area of nanostructures and subwavelength phenomena.
  • Conceive and develop new ideas, capabilities, and products.
  • This position may also provide applications support to sales and marketing staff by responding to technical and design questions, and by preparing and presenting technical papers
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:
  • Optical Engineering or Physics/Photonics related degree at a post-graduate level (or equivalent).
  • 3+ years of experience in optics/photonics industry, including optical design, simulation, and manufacture of thin films and patterned thin films.
  • Proficiency with RCWA, FDTD, thin film coating design and calculation, and other tools for determining optical properties of thin films and sub-wavelength structured surfaces (1-D to 2.5-D).
  • 2+ years of experience in semiconductor-like industry, with focus on new product and process development, and including optical characterization, ellipsometry, and other optical methods. Experience in UV-Vis-IR analytical spectroscopy is a plus.
  • Demonstrated capability of developing new ideas into simulated models and prototype products.

Competencies: The essential functions of this position require the following competencies.
  • Strong background in optics, including physical/wave optics, geometric optics, and lasers.
  • In-depth understanding of polarization, optical thin film design, subwavelength gratings, birefringence, and other subwavelength and resonance phenomena.
  • Ability to work with others in a diverse team environment, while contributing individual expertise
  • Ability to communicate in English, verbally and written, including business and technical matters.
  • Adapts to changing priorities, and treats change and new situations as opportunities
