Job Summary:

This position is a member of the Optics Post Fab Operations & Assembly Engineering Team, supporting the effort to design and manufacture optical components used for the Moxtek cube beamsplitter product line. The majority of this work is generating custom drawings for specific customer applications, and later orchestrating the cube beamsplitter assembly with Moxtek's subcontractors to meet drawing specifications. The job function will also include glass part cutting, inspection, optical performance measurement, sub-assembly (if necessary), packaging, and shipping

Essential Functions:

  1. Work closely with Sales and Product Management to design, develop, and optimize new (or improve existing) polarizing beamsplitter prism assemblies (includes cube beamsplitters) and related products for key customers.
  2. Optimize processes for assembly procedures, including troubleshooting and implementing solutions for suboptimal processes.
  3. Seek out, evaluate, and implement improvements to cube beamsplitter work flow and product quality, especially as it relates to new equipment and processes.
  4. Interface between Sales, Production, Product Management, and Engineering to ensure orders are completely documented and are completed accurate, and on-time.
  5. Perform failure analysis on returned material and complete corrective action plans.
  6. Ensure the cube beamsplitter production work flow has a complete understanding of customer requirements for both 'standard' and 'non-standard' orders.
  7. Support the cube beamsplitter production work flow with day-to-day issues and troubleshooting.
  8. Write and maintain cube beamsplitter operating procedures and related documents.
  9. Develop training plan to keep operations current on cube beamsplitter job requirements and specifications.
  10. Maintain instruction sets for non-standard orders; includes custom substrates and AR coatings, optical performance measurements, data formatting and sending, packaging and shipping requirements, etc.
  11. Design and evaluate packaging options, plus establish functional relationships with package manufacturers.
  12. Evaluate and interpret customer drawings and specifications relative to internal product specifications and determine whether customer requirements are feasible.
  13. Design, carry out, and document experiments per Moxtek standards.
  14. Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  1. B.S. in Optics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field (M.S. advantageous)
  2. 2+ years working in an engineering environment (mechanical design experience preferred)
  3. Experience working with optical assemblies a plus.
  4. Experience working in clean room a plus.
  5. Packaging design for sensitive optical components experience is beneficial.


  1. Demonstrated mastery of written and verbal communication.
  2. Self-motivated, with strong project management and organizational skills.
  3. Analytical and creative thinking skills.
  4. Aptitude for hardware assembly required.
  5. Proficiency in SolidWorks and Microsoft Office required; proficiency in programming and scripting languages preferred.
  6. Willingness to travel, and comfortable arranging these travel plans last-minute when required.
  7. Knowledge of optics a plus, especially relating to polarization, spectrometry, and wave front distortion.
  8. Experience leading design reviews, including failure mode and effects analyses.
