Job Summary:

The Detector Scientist will have primary responsibility to participate in research and development of semiconductor and gas detectors for the x-ray spectrometry. The responsibilities include the design, research, improvement, implementation and testing of the x-ray detectors hardware and control software.

 Essential Functions:

  1. Conduct soft X-Ray detector research and development, develop requirements and realize new design concepts for optimized detection solutions, starting from proof-of concept work to establish technical feasibility and market value.
  2. Simulation modeling and data analysis.
  3. Extensive detector testing, design of the new test procedures and test equipment.
  4. Assist in defining the mechanical parts and front end electronics requirements and specifications.
  5. Work close with manufacturing to facilitate production yield improvement and to troubleshoot problems.
  6. Work closely with Application Group to help provide customers the best service.
  7. Work closely with vendors to ensure the timely delivery of high quality components.
  8. Conduct deep literature and patent search.
  9. Prepare reports and oral presentations, including peer reviewed journal presentations as appropriate.
  10. Participate in development of patent applications.
  11. Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  1. PhD in Physics or EE, MS or BS. with appropriate combination of knowledge and experience.
  2. 3-5 years' experience in a Physics or Electrical Engineering field
  3. Demonstrated experience in all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification and transfer to manufacturing.


To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position.

  1. Good knowledge of ionizing radiation detection physics.
  2. Deep understanding of semiconductor/solid state physics and semiconductor devices physics.
  3. Good understanding of low noise electronics principles and digital signal processing.
  4. Understanding of semiconductor manufacturing processes.
  5. Knowledge of gaseous radiation detectors will be a plus.
  6. Familiarity with vacuum equipment.
  7. Hands on experience in laboratory equipment use and maintenance.
  8. Understanding of XRF spectroscopy principles will be a plus.
  9. Good computer skills, programming experience will be a plus.
  10. Ability to work independently and as a team member.
